Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Cook-Rite 60-Minute Quartz Timer, White

Customer Review: Works as advertised
Summary: 5 Stars

I let my kids use this to time their showers because they tended to stay in too long. It works.

Customer Review: Very handy timer.
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a very good product for the money. I use it to time cooking on my backyard gas grill.

Customer Review: good timer
Summary: 5 Stars

It is easy to use and I like how the alarm gets louder and louder with time.

Customer Review: Sunbeam Timer good value
Summary: 5 Stars

This seems to be a good product. It is a good value and works well.

Customer Review: Mother-in-Law approved!
Summary: 4 Stars

Based on the mixed reviews here, I really want to give this timer more time to... well, to fail. But it's been a few months, and so far it's "ticking" along just fine.

I bought it on a whim. My mother-in-law moved in with us. She's decidedly analog -- i.e. doesn't like digital scales or timers, etc. -- but her old Sunbeam mechanical timer has a problem: it's ring is too quiet and too short. She doesn't hear it half the time, and frankly, I'm surprised we haven't had a kitchen fire up to now.

This timer isn't meant to offer the to-the-second precision of a standard kitchen timer, and for most purposes, that's fine. It's meant to replace a familiar technology and improve on it, and in that respect, it succeeds.

Because it doesn't tick, there's a red LED on the face that illuminates to indicate that it's on and counting down. The dial moves to give a quick visual indication of how many minutes are remaining (and this is a feat in and of itself for something so inexpensive). And of course there's the beep that escalates in both volume and frequency when the time reaches zero. It's loud, long and insistent enough to catch her attention nearly every time (maybe not so much if she's out of the room!).

The cons:
- It does feel cheap. It's extremely lightweight, the dial turns almost too easily, and the plastic feels brittle. These are somewhat subjective impressions, I realize, but they are qualities the designer of this product should pay attention to. It wouldn't take much to impart a greater sense of quality in this timer.

- The dial needs just a little bit more resistance to it. This ties in with my previous comment, and I'm guessing the reason it's so easy to turn is so it's easier to mechanically drive back to zero as it counts down. But regardless, seeing as how it is designed to mimic the operation of a mechanical kitchen timer, it should strive to replicate not just the appearance, but the tactile experience, as well.

- This timer is difficult to find. Note that neither "dial" nor "electronic" appear in the product description. Even just now when I was searching for it on Amazon to write this review, I had a difficult time finding it. (I'm just mentioning this as an aside; I didn't gig my rating based on this.)
