Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Taylor 9842 Commercial Waterproof Digital Thermometer

Customer Review: Works very well, fast response time
Summary: 5 Stars

The thing I care most about with a thermometer is the delay on a reading, because usually I'm on my knees in front of my open oven trying to check on a roast chicken or something, and the longer I have to leave the oven open, the more it interferes with the cooking.

This thermometer responds very quickly. Within about 5 seconds, it may still be changing a bit, but it's converged to where I know the temperature.

Mine was very accurate right out of the box. I tested it with ice water and boiling water and both were spot-on. And the little calibration dial looks simple enough to use if it happened to be slightly off.

My only complaint, but it's not even enough to bump my review down a star, is that the battery insertion is a bit of a pain. I opened it at first to see how it worked and then it took me 15 minutes of fumbling to get the thing back together. That's due to the waterproofing -- the drawer is this fiddly piece of rubber, so it's hard to really get the battery lined up just right, and the rubber's a bit bigger than the opening, so that it forms a tight seal. Given how infrequently I'll need to replace the battery, it's not a big concern.

I haven't tested the waterproofing too aggressively; for me the benefit is just being comfortable holding the whole thermometer under running water to clean it, or leaving it on the counter where I might splash liquid on it and not having to worry that it'll short out.

Customer Review: The best piece of kitchen equipment I own...
Summary: 5 Stars

...and I own a lot! It's reasonably quick, very accurate, and VERY durable! That last part is especially important as I can be rather absent minded sometimes. I left it out on the grill on a very rainy Oregon week and fully expected it to be toast. To my great delight, I turned it on and it worked just fine!

I've had more than a few probe thermometer probes (the kind with the metal thermometer wired to a base unit that looks like a small alarm clock) turn wildly inaccurate over time, but this doesn't share those problems in the least. I've probably used it over 400 times by now, and it's still going strong, on its original battery no less.

The thermometer has two nice features worth mentioning: first is the shape of the head- it's mostly circular, but with flattened sections on the top and bottom so that you can lay it down on the counter without it rolling all over the place.

The other nice thing is the sharp point and slim profile of the probe, probably about the same width as a headphone connector. These factors make insertion into a nice medium-rare steak much less like pushing a rope than with thicker, blunter thermometers and doesn't poke a huge hole in the meat. (Though for roasting, you should probably plug the hole back up with a bamboo skewer or something.)

Customer Review: Know your heat
Summary: 5 Stars

I used this thermometer for the first time last night. I did a butterfly chicken smoke on the WSM. The heat inside the beast was 325F and the chicken was cooking away. At the 45min mark I opened the lid for the first time and checked the breast and thigh with this thermometer. Breast showed 155 and thigh was at 148. Had a little more to go. With the rush of oxygen into the coal chamber, the overall heat went up to 350. The chicken was sizzling. Another 15minutes later I opened the lid once more, pulled out my handy Taylor 9842 Digital Thermometer and stuck the pointy probe into the breast of the chicken. 161.5F ! We are good...now for the thigh. 171F ! Oh yes this bird was ready to come off. The end result? Super juicy and perfectly done fall off the bone meat. Thank you Taylor 9842 Commercial Waterproof Digital Thermometer for letting my know when my dinner was ready to be devoured.

I highly recommend this thermometer for its quick read and high accuracy. If you are a BBQ-Smoker, this yellow guy is essential. Clean up is a breeze thanks to its Waterproof nature.

Customer Review: Great Thermometer, Great Price...
Summary: 5 Stars

I already own several thermometers and bought this one just to use with the grill outside. I was surprised at how quickly it became my main thermomoeter both inside and outside.

Pros:

-Nice compact size, about the size of a ballpoint pen plus the head. Easy to carry.
-Cleanup is a snap.
-Accurate. I tested it against a much more expensive infrared thermometer on hot liquids, this little Taylor was within 0.3 degrees on every measurement.
-It registers within 5-6 seconds, about 2-3 times faster than my other comperable thermometers. This makes a big difference when you are holding a steak over the grill!

Cons:
-The buttons are a little small.
-It isn't very sturdy, I wouldn't put it in the oven or even leave it in the sun when grilling. It's size makes up for this, I just stick it in a pocket (after putting on the protective sleve of course) and keep it with me.

Overall a nice purchase considering the price I paid, I ordered a second one to use inside.

Customer Review: Works for me!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this item out of necessity -- my prior digital thermometer had 'lost its mind' (indicated 175 degrees when at room temperature, even with a fresh battery!).
The new one is great. I especially appreciate the auto-shutoff feature as I repeatedly forgot to shut the prior one off, thus shortening its battery life. I agree with other reviewers in that it seems a bit slower than others I've used to 'finalize' on the temperature, but then maybe it's just being anal about accuracy - not a bad thing :). Despite the fact that it is claimed waterproof by the manufacturer, I won't submerge it in dishwater or put it in the dishwasher - but that's just me. The construction of the item does look to be more commercial-grade/rugged than others I've seen or used. And it's nice to know that I can ensure accuracy by calibrating/recalibrating now and then (or if the reading looks a bit suspicious). Overall I am very satisfied with the item and would recommend it..
