I've had it for nearly a year, battery cover hasen't broken (don't know how you could break it, and I break the battery cover off of everything). I also don't understand why anyone would use this for minutes at a time, but mine has never shot off while I had been using it. It's also not instant read, I got it for the temperature range at the low cost.
Description of Taylor 9878E Slim-Line Waterproof Pocket Thermometer
The Taylor 9878E Slim-Line Waterproof Pocket Thermometer is a professional grade thermometer that can be recalibrated for perfect temperature readings every time. The waterproof and dishwasher safe 9878E measures temperatures from -40 degrees to +500 degrees. The 9878E also measures in C as well as F. The battery compartment on the newest model has been improved and the FDA 1.5mm probe has been added for more accuracy. The extra large backlit LCD is easy to read in most light conditions. This thermometer is NSF listed.First-rate in all respects, this instant-read digital thermometer is ideal for household cooks. Because it's digital, you don't need to insert it deeply for an accurate reading--just 1 inch will do--and the reading is updated every 2 seconds. Its extra-wide temperature range is -58 to 500 degrees F (-50 to 260 degrees C), with a switch to select Fahrenheit or Celsius. Buttons recall maximum/minimum temperatures, and the memory persists even when the thermometer is turned off. It features the new FDA recommended 1.5mm step-down probe tip. The Safe-T-Guard sleeve incorporates a non toxic chemical compound that inhibits the growth of pathogens which minimizes cross contamination.The thermometer operates on a replaceable watch battery (included), and can be recalibrated for long-life precision.
