Customer Review: kitchen staple
Summary: 5 Stars

Although I am not familiar with other candy thermometers, I am very happy with this product and own two.

Customer Review: Candy Thermometer
Summary: 5 Stars

Excellent thermometer. Best I have ever used. Very easy to use and read. Very durable.

Customer Review: Product Description Needs Updating
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased this to make fudge for the first time ever this year and you can't really do that properly without a thermometer. I gave this item 4 stars because of the clip. It does not "clip" to the pan as stated in the product description. Before I took it out of the package, I thought the clip was stationery and it just clipped onto the pan. Nope. The thermometer I got has an adjustable clip, which slides up and down and rests, not clips, onto the side of the pan. The bottom of the thermometer actually rests on the bottom of the pan and when the clip is in place, the thermometer sits at a slight angle. I was worried that the mercury part was actually touching the bottom of the pan, but because of the way the thermometer sits at an angle, the mercury portion of the thermometer is about 1/2 inch away from the bottom of the pan, which insures no false readings. Unlike other reviewers, mine actually measured above 220 degrees and they probably didn't let their syrup boil long enough. Some of the other reviewers also stated that the thermometer was hard to clean or that the markings wore off or the glass cracked. Whenever you take a hot thermometer out of a pan, you shouldn't run it under cold water because that can shock the glass, causing it to crack. When I used it, I had a tall glass of warm, soapy water waiting for me and I simply soaked the thermometer in there, wiped it gently with a sponge, and it was clean in 5 minutes. If you're only going to make fudge, brittle, or other types of candy once or twice a year, pick one of these up.

Customer Review: What more could you want?
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this item at a local (nationally owned) grocery store in a pinch because I wanted to try my hand at making my own potato chips. I'd wanted something like this before because i like to fry foods and do a lot of outdoor cooking with my turkey fryer.

I've used quite a few times now, and I wonder where all the negative stink (AKA, reviews) is coming from. I've noticed no disappearance of markings (something that seems to bother a lot of reviewers of lots of other fine items that I've never experienced.

It's extremely accurate and couldn't be easier to use.

The best part? The price!!! So what if the markings (if you really need them, scratch them onto the metal yourself) wear off for whatever reason. Go buy a new one. Perhaps you could get some other product that does a little better, but at what price. I find something like this that I don't use that often to be perfect for what I need it for.

Customer Review: Accurate and sturdy, but unweildy and hard to clean
Summary: 4 Stars

This thermometer is much larger than I expected. It is difficult when preparing small quantities, such as boiling sugar for buttercream, to gauge the temperature accurately without doing a little balancing act to tip the pan and hold the thermometer in it. It also features a number of unnecessary nooks and crannies that make it difficult to clean, especially once sugar has gotten up to hard ball stage or so.

With those limitations, this is an excellent thermometer. It is accurate, and has sturdy construction. The glass components seem fairly well protected. It is definately more reliable than most little candy thermometers that need endless recalibration, and that tends to make up for the inconveniences for me.
