This is a pretty basic, but handy little thermometer. It comes with a plastic clip-on protective case. One thing the description doesn't mention is that the hole you can insert the thermometer into for recalibration, can also be used to just put the thermometer into to allow it to sit across the the top of a jar. I don't consider it to be an "instant-read" since it does take a little bit of time for the pointer to spin around, but it is still pretty quick.Customer Review: Great for soap making!

I bought two of these when I began making home made soap. I use one for the lye and one for the oils. The stainless steel is great for this so I don't have to remember which is which between uses.
I tested them against each other and against another thermometer I had and they were perfectly accurate out of the box, but I love that I can adjust them if they vary over time.
Price was right too.

This thermometer works great for setting my small wine refrigerator to the right temperature. Wine does taste better if it is not refrigerated too cold. The thermometer is universal enough to be use from room to room to check AC and heating, or to check temperatures in the freezer as well as a refrigerator. When it is out of use, I keep it on my desk as a indoor thermometer.Customer Review: Worked for me!

I needed to take the temperature of some milk I was boiling and cooling for yogurt - I knew my old thermometer never worked so I bought this one because it was cheap & easy and had some pretty good reviews. Surprise surprise - it worked and was quick!!! :) So easy and simple...don't waste your money on the more expensive ones!!! This thermometer not only works well, but I was able to calibrate it to the digital one that is dying. Since I make bread, but live in a very damp area, it is vitally important that all my ingrediants are within a certain temperature range. My digital worked well, but not for much longer. So I was able to get this Taylor to match that one.
