I'm honestly surprised at all the negative reviews here. I can only guess that the previous reviewers received defective items.
My mom and I were both looking for a basic, inexpensive wind-up timer, just like the one she used back in the 70s and 80s. I picked up one of these for each of us, and we love them. We have had them for about a year now, with no problems at all. The bell rings loud and clear, and I have never had a problem with it not working as it's supposed to.
For the person who is troubled by the back of the timer being open...it's probably so as not to muffle the sound of the bell ringing. Seriously, though, how attractive do you expect a five-dollar wind-up kitchen timer to be?
